Thoughts
Companies have been making 28-300mm lenses for a long time, and only recently did Canon decide to join them. The Canon 28-300 f/3.5-5.6 is marketed as “L” glass, which means it’s heavy and expensive; however, unlike other L-series lenses, most users find its picture quality to be lacking. Additionally, it’s a “push-pull” zoom, which is an irritant for many photographers. Like most expensive L zooms, it includes Canon’s image stabilizing technology.
This lens covers a very wide range of focal lengths, and there’s a reason few lenses do this. The extreme amount of zoom leads to trade-offs: the lens will necessarily be slower, heavier, less sharp, and/or more expensive than lenses that cover a smaller range of focal lengths.
For about the same amount of money, you could get a 24-105 f/4 L IS and a 70-300 DO IS. That said, there are situations where you need to switch from wide angle to telephoto quickly, and you either don’t have time to swap lenses or don’t really want to open your camera—the shot might be gone by the time you switch, or you might be on a beach contending with blowing sand and salt water spray.
Bottom Line
If you can’t change lenses, this is the way to go. If not, you’ll almost certainly get better quality shots for less money by using more specialized lenses.
